I was watching that exact video this morning, and sent it to my son, who plays trumpet in his HS band. Incredible how they can do that live every bit as well as they could in the studio.

It’s all good. I just laugh and shake my head because it’s all so unbelievable. I had a friend in grad school who hailed from Minnesota, and his big claim to fame was that he lived not far from where Chase’s plane came down.

Which makes me realize that I’ve written about Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, SRV and others in TDIAH, but I’ve never written about Bill Chase. I need to fix that.

I played a bit of Cronus for one of my MS students this morning. Her eyes got wide as saucers. I particularly like that ridiculously acrobatic opening Chase does. The precision and articulation are simply incredible.

See Chicago if you get the chance. We saw them last year and they were terrific . Original trombonist, sax and trumpet player. What I didn’t realize was that all that sound came from just those guys on their album. The dudes just stood their and played for 1 1/2 hours. Amazing as they have been playing almost 50 years!

It's all fun amd games until they hit the key change, then you realize "Wait, they're going to play it HIGHER???"

I think every music student who thinks to themselves, “horn rock, yeah! Chicago! Earth Wind and Fire! Blood Sweat and Tears! I can play the same stuff every night if I just learn to play in sharps.”...then you hear Chase and say, "or maybe I just should practice more."
